Alcoa Fujikura producer of cable systems announced it would close a plant in the Czech Republic in the second half of this year, with production to be transferred to Romania in one of the plants the company owns domestically. According to the company's representatives, the Czech plant will be closed in September and the 790 employees will be laid off. The company has not announced to which of the Romanian plants it would relocate the Czech production, but mentioned a team of 40 employees of AFL in the Czech Republic was already training the Romanian workers. Alcoa owns four plants in Romania, two in Caransebes, one in Nadab (Arad) and one in Beius (Bihor), employing around 4,000 people. The company's turnover in Romania was put at around 31m euros in 2008. Alcoa Fujikura is not the only producer to have announced the transfer of production from a plant in central Europe to Romania this year. Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems announced a month ago it would close the plant in Rawicz, Poland, and relocate production to one of its facilities in Alba Iulia, Deva or Orastie.
