American giant P&G makes 13 billion dollars' worth of acquisitions, from pens and laptops to raw material used for its operations in around 150 locations, from an office with 230 employees in Bucharest.

Therefore, every employee working in P&G's Procurement Center in Bucharest has the responsibility of brokering 56 million dollars in transactions per year on average, making up about a quarter of P&G's sales in Romania.

The pressure to make the business more efficient has persuaded increasingly more big companies to centralise their procurement and accounting services by opening regional offices in emerging countries that offer the advantage of low labour costs.

"This year we expect to process acquisitions worth 13 billion dollars, one billion euros more than in 2009. The Bucharest office processes acquisitions made in 150 companies within P&G in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa," said Yasser Abdelnalek, manager of P&G Procurement Center in Bucharest. The services centre, opened in 2005, has 145 P&G employees and 90 subcontractors.
