The number of tourists that were accommodated in Mamaia seaside resort in the first summer month fell by 40-50% against the similar period of last year, with only half the hotel rooms being occupied, according to a ZF analysis using data from the Association for Promotion of the Romanian Seaside.

Nearly 250,000 tourists were accommodated in Mamaia hotels (according to data centralised until June 28), with most tourists visiting the resort in the second half of June, and 10,000-11,000 tourists recorded per day, from just 2,000-3,000 in the first half. This compares with almost double as many tourists in mid-June last year, over 22,000 per day. Most tourists accommodated in Mamaia hotels are Romanians, with only 5% foreigners.

"This summer will be full of challenges for hotel operators. I hope the number of tourists will remain at last year's level. One needs tourist attractions in order to draw as many tourists as possible," said Corina Martin, chairperson of the Association for Promotion of the Romanian Seaside at a forum on the hotel industry.

The most affected hotels by the lack of tourists were lower-priced one, two, and three-star hotels, which operated with less than half the rooms occupied.
