One of Romania's biggest energy projects, the over 1bn-euro hydropower station of Tarniţa-Lăpuşteşti, is taking its first steps after the Economy Ministry this summer started selecting investors and setting up the project company.

Those preparing the details related to starting construction works say that next year the investor due to come up with the money together with Hidroelectrica for construction works involving 5,000 people to start is likely to be selected. So far, the list of interested parties includes 150 names.

This is the only major project in the hydro-energy field after the Revolution for which works are likely to start in the following years.

The necessity of such a construction, due to have a 1,000MW capacity, higher than that of a reactor of Cernavodă nuclear power station, comes as Romanian authorities plan to set up another two nuclear reactors, but also amid the high number of wind energy projects underway.
