Large energy projects that ended another year "just on paper" carried over in 2011
The year that has just ended was supposed to play a major role
for Romania's energy industry, with huge projects and major
reshuffle ideas being launched. Unfortunately, all the plans are
still on paper, so that 2011 is practically an extension for the
projects scheduled for completion or that were underway in
2010.
Though the two energy giants, Electra and Hidroenergetica were due
to become operational in mid-2010, the tens of lawsuits filed
against the move to reshuffle the national energy generation system
put the project off. Another major project delayed for this year
are the two 4bn-euro reactors of Cernavodă. Another postponed
project, which is now taking small steps, though, is the one of the
over 1bn-euro station of Tarniţa-Lăpuşteşti.
In the area of projects worth billions of euros, but in the field
of natural gas, 2011 is likely to be a crucial year for Nabucco,
the only interconnection project likely to cut Europe's dependence
on Russian gas.
Besides these projects where the state plays a major role, one of
this year's certainties is related to further investments in wind
farms.
