George Mihalcea, 50, former general manager of Aurel Vlaicu (Băneasa) airport, has been appointed as airport services manager with Qatar Airways airline, one of the world's biggest, which will operate flights on the Romanian market starting January 17.

Qatar's national airline, which last year shipped 12 million passengers and operates on 92 routes of Europe, Africa, South America, Asia and the Middle East, is part of the five-star category and has been designated as the best airline of the Middle East for five consecutive years.

"In late December 2010 I resigned from Aurel Vlaicu airport and submitted my CV to Qatar Airways, where I was appointed as airport services manager," stated Mihalcea, who will run the airline's Romanian operations.

Mihalcea also worked for KLM and Lufthansa airlines before taking over the reins of Băneasa airport.

Qatar Airways is getting ready to introduce its flights from Bucharest, set to be operated with a frequency of four flights per week from Otopeni airport.
