Only two of the nine private companies that received state aid last year, which amounting to an overall 191 million euros, have Romanian shareholders, according to data sent to ZF by the Finance Ministry.

Rolling stock repair plant Remar Paşcani, part of Grup Feroviar Român (the Romanian Railway Group), controlled by businessman Gruia Stoica, received support for a project to build an agricultural complex. Aaylex Trading, controlled by Bogdan Stanca, Viorel Gavril Fetinca and Bogdan Gruia, holds 66.06% in poultry producer Avicola Buzău.

"There are big projects that Romanian companies cannot carry out because they don't have the expertise, the resources, financial resources included. In big projects, Romanians succeed only if they partner with international firms. Foreign companies are even sometimes criticised for coming to Romania and using Romanian workers, local resources. But one overlooks the fact that foreign companies have expertise in similar projects and a greater financing ability," commented financial analyst Aurelian Dochia.
