ANAF spends 420,000 euros on videoconferencing instead of using free software

The National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) will not use free software that allows videoconferencing, such as Skype, saying that it can be targeted by cyber attacks, preferring instead to buy a video communication system for 420,000 euros (VAT included) with public funds. "Skype-like applications, which use public communication networks, are vulnerable to intrusions and aggressions," ANAF representatives said in response to a ZF request. According to them, the systems that will be purchased need to be secure because more often than not the data sent will be confidential. According to an ad published on e-licitatie.ro, ANAF this month organises an auction to acquire 44 terminals and 7 video projection sets consisting of a videoprojector and a screen. According to ANAF representatives, the videoconferencing system set to be bought will ensure communication between the institutions headquarters and its county divisions. The contract will be valid for 90 days since signing. The companies taking part in the auction are required to have a minimum 500,000-euro average annual turnover.
