Banks can now levy a fee of as much as 20 RON on the amountstransferred to the customers' account through a payment order. Thefee is hard to justify and has been introduced by bankers as analternative source of revenue at a time when loan sales are verypoor.

Also, customers pay a fee of up to 7 RON for cash deposits inone's own account made through a bank officer, with thejustification being that it is used to cover the network'soperating costs.
Customers pay fees for amounts transferred into their accountsthrough payment orders, even though the operation was previouslytaxed when the payment order was issued. Legally, banks can chargesuch fees only if they are specified in the contract signed by thecustomer.
Constantin Cerbulescu, chairman of the Authority for ConsumerProtection, says, however, that the institution he runs analysedcases in which customers were charged for transfers into theiraccounts, even if those fees were not included in the contract, with the banks being penalised as a result.
Fees on amounts transferred into an account through payment ordersrange between 1 and 22.5 RON depending on the value of thetransaction, and are most often charged if payment was ordered bythe customer of another bank.
