Finance Ministry's move to tax big fortunes targets 1-2% of taxpayers

Taxation of big fortunes will target 1-2% of taxpayers, with thetarget group including people with big fortunes or big spending whodid not declare their incomes, according to Finance MinisterGheorghe Ialomiţianu.


The National Fiscal Administration Agency (ANAF) is to set upseveral departments that will run checks on people with highincomes or with big spending.
"The experience of other countries tells us that our target amountsto 1-2% of the total. The dedicated ANAF departments will include30-40 people. The target group will consist of people with bigfortunes or with big spending," said Ialomiţianu.
The indirect methods of checking the incomes will apply only toincomes made in 2011, but the Finance Minister gave assurances thatowners of mansions and of cars who failed to declare their incomesuntil this year would not be spared from the checks.
At the end of last year the Government decided that individualswhose actual incomes exceeded the amounts declared by at least50,000, would pay a 16% tax charged on the difference between thetwo amounts.
The Government will request technical assistance from the WorldBank both to put together the application norms and to trainemployees who will be involved in the check.
According to the ANAF chairman, Sorin Blejnar, the checks willtarget 200-300 people, mainly very wealthy business owners who inthe past few years deliberately failed to declare their incomes,thus dodging taxes.
