Romania has just 33 of the 500 biggest companies in CEE

Only 33 domestic companies are included in the ranking of the 500 biggest players in CEE, shows a Deloitte survey that took into account turnover.

Though Romania is the third biggest market in the region in terms of the number of inhabitants, only behind Poland and Ukraine, the number of companies included in the ranking places the domestic market on the fifth position, after Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Ukraine.
Moreover, Romanian capital is poorly represented, with only one of the 33 companies of Romania, namely RCS&RDS, being in the ranking drawn up by Deloitte, which also includes five state-owned companies and 27 companies controlled by foreign investors.
In the top 50 of giants in the region there are just two companies registered in Romania, Petrom and Dacia.
However, Romania is better positioned in the ranking of banks and producers, having one representative in the top 10 of each of these fields.
Only 16% of Romanian giant companies registered an upward turnover trend last year against 2008, with a similar percentage posted in Hungary, Bulgaria and Poland.
