Vodafone, no. 2 on the Romanian mobile telephony market, posted a 396 million-euro EBITDA in the fiscal year ended 31st of March, down over 25% against the previous year, while overall revenues were 21% lower, at 921.5 million euros.

"The difficult economic context, the continued decline of consumption, as well as the increased competitiveness of the Romanian telecommunications market were the main factors behind our results," said Liliana Solomon, CEO of Vodafone Romania. Vodafone's operating income, however, remained at 43% of the revenues, says Solomon. "We managed to keep the profitability of our service revenues high thanks to the company's efficiency-oriented programmes. EBITDA as a percentage of service revenues fell by only 3% year-on-year, which is a major achievement."

Vodafone Romania's new clients in the 2009/2010 fiscal year amounted to 142,000, bringing the overall number to 9.73 million on the 31st of March 2010. The operator boosted its customer base by 1% against 2008/2009.
