Romania has major difficulties in its fiscal policy, with evasion reaching the proportions of a problem of national security, with a political decision being needed in order to move to a rigorous payment of taxes, believes Eugen Radulescu, manager of the audit division of the NBR (National Bank of Romania). "The level of evasion is endemic... It has reached the dimensions of a national security problem. We will not be able to progress, to get out of the void without solving this problem. There are major weaknesses along the entire collection chain. Major competition distortions occur. Some pay, others don't. Some are strong, and are not targeted by inspections, only fools are checked," said Radulescu at the conference "Topical coordinates of the Romanian economy's restructuring," organised by Capital magazine. He says in order to solve the tax evasion problem, a political decision is needed. "The political world should decide it is time to be good payers of taxes."
