How did 2bn euros vanish from FMCG market?
The market of fast moving consumer goods could reach 20 billion
euros this year, a 10% decline on last year, with a Romanian's
shopping basket being 93 euros lower.
So, while a Romanian would spend 1,023 euros on average on fast
moving consumer goods in 2009, the salary cuts and the redundancies
took about 10% from the value of basket, leaving the budget at
almost 930 euros.
The value of this market is calculated based on sales of products
in supermarkets, hypermarkets, discount, and cash & carry store
chains. Also included are small and big food stores, as well as
convenience stores, petrol stations, general stores, drugstores,
perfumeries, pet shops and chemical shops, as well as sales on the
on-premise segment (hotels, restaurants, coffee shops).
The major declines recorded in 2010 come as a result of the
measures taken by the government, which directly affected
consumption.
