UPC, ranking third on the domestic high-speed fixed Internet market, launched its cable Internet services with data download speeds of up to 120 Mpbs in 12 cities, thus beating its rivals RCS&RDS and Romtelecom for the first time in this respect.

The domestic subsidiary of the US company has been facing criticism about the speed of its data services for retail clients over time, so that the operator has over the past two years invested in infrastructure, namely in the implementation of the Eurodocsis 3.0 platform, to be able to launch packages outperforming those of rivals.

UPC in late 2010 had 255,000 fixed Internet clients, compared with around one million in the case of Romtelecom and more than 1.1 million at RCS&RDS.

UPC Romania could provide Internet services to 1.6 million households of Romania without expanding its network, according to the data regarding cable infrastructure coverage published by Liberty Global, owner of the operator.

After gradual launches in several cities of the country, started in Cluj last year, UPC is now fighting over clients on the key Bucharest market as well, the most important "battleground" for Internet services in Romania, considering this is where the highest number of clients with above-average incomes is.
