Cernavodă-Medgidia motorway up for tender again. New deadline for completion set for 2012

The National Motorway and National Road Company of Romania (CNADNR) estimates the completion of the Cernavodă-Medgidia motorway section (19.25 kilometres) will cost 500 to 700 million lei (120-170 million euros) excluding VAT, reveals an ad published on the e-licitatie.ro

CNADNR terminated the contract with the French at Colas for this section at the beginning of last week and now intends to put the respective road up for tender again, with procedures to award the contract set to begin at the end of May. On the other hand, the deadline for the completion of the construction works is one year from the awarding of the contract followed by a two-year warranty.

However, chances are rather slim that work should begin this year.

"It's very late. The termination of the contract comes with a series of repercussions on the construction process itself. Work will probably be resumed next year, considering the section in question will be put up for tender again, then there will be a time to challenge the result so that the 2011 construction season for this motorway will be over. Costs are high if we look at things with the time wasted in mind," said Răzvan-Niculescu Aron, first vice-president of the Ownership of Romanian Contractors (PSC).
