The deregulation of the oil product prices on the market has been endorsed by SNP Petrom, as well. One thing should be noted though: the private operators want the price tied to the international quotes, while Petrom wants it tied to the supply and demand on the domestic market. "We need to see these (fuel) prices deregulated in Romania, so that they can be wherever the market tells them to be and provide the margin to allow refining units to grow," Gheorghe Constantinescu, Petrom general manager said during the "Oil market" seminar organised by the Piata Financiara economic magazine on Tuesday. Constantinescu added the deregulation of the prices should occur at the same time as Petrom's privatisation at the earliest or within a year at the latest.
He said the gas price on the free European market was more or less 1 euro/litre, with 25%-30% of it allocated to the development component, a quota that should be allocated on the Romanian market, too.
"The fuel prices on the Romanian market are freely set, because Petrom faces competition from other operators, and some of them are not only retailers, but also fuel producers, such as Rompetrol or Rafo. They have distribution networks on the market and can make the price fluctuate," Petrom's general manager told Ziarul Financiar.
He says the deregulation of the market means "the price is set by the fuel supply and demand on the market. The price will be dictated by the market, because a poor market does not take a high, unrealistic price and overproduction will lead to fuel exports."
Under the circumstances, the deregulation of the fuel prices does not necessarily mean a rise in prices, which could rather be caused by the euro gaining ground against the ROL, Petrom's general manager explains.
