Aviva Group has a strong commitment in the Central and Eastern European economies, and Romania is one of the countries where we expect a fast growth in our business volume, Richard Harvey, Aviva Group's chief executive said at the end of last week. Aviva Romania announced it had seen 30% growth in ROL in Q1, 2004 from Q1, 2003. Aviva in 2003 registered 227bn ROL (6.1 million euros) premiums underwritten, up 37% in ROL and 15% in euros compared with the previous year. The life insurance market in terms of gross premiums underwritten is estimated to have increased by 26% in euros last year to 178 million euros. The company therefore lost some of its market share. "It is really easy to sell products that provide little benefit to clients. We try to stick to a long-term policy, first of all supplying confidence to those who buy a policy from us," Harvey said, explaining the slower growth pace of the company compared to that of the overall market last year.
