Canadians eye infrastructure and energy

20.11.2003, 00:00 8

The most attractive sectors for Canadian exporters or investors in Romania are energy, mining and engineering, with infrastructure soon to join them, said Robert Forbes, deputy chairman of Export Development Canada on Tuesday. "A most interesting domain lately has been the unconventional energy, either aeolian, solar or geothermal. I think we'll see such projects in Romania, too," the Canadian official said while in Bucharest. EDC is a Canadian governmental agency that grants loans and guarantees for Canadian exports. The agency's turnover amounted to more than $50bn last year. The volume of the operations in which the institution was involved in Romania last year amounted to $51 million, with the indicator set to reach $343 million this year. This unusual growth is due to EDC securing $300 million out of the $700 million loan taken out by the nuclear power plant in Cernavoda for the works on Unit 2. EDC's largest operations volume in the Central and Eastern Europe, about $180 million, was registered in Kyrgyzstan last year. ZF
