The sales of Carrefour Romania increased by 27% in the second quarter of this year, against the same time in 2006 (leaving aside exchange rate fluctuations), with the company only opening one store last year, according to the parent company's financial report. The French-based Carrefour hypermarket network currently owns 7 stores in Romania, with the last opening on the domestic market taking place in October 2006, in the Tom shopping centre in Constanta. Recently, another French group, Hyparlo, taken over by Carrefour in 2006, announced a 53% turnover increase for its Romanian Carrefour stores for the first quarter of this year, against the same period of 2006, which accounts for a total of 171.3 million euros. Between April 2006 and April 2007, the retailer opened two new stores in Romania- one in Baneasa (near Bucharest) and another in Constanta. Carrefour, whose expansion on the Romanian market is currently in full swing, experienced the highest growth rate among the European subsidiaries included in the French group Carrefour. However, representatives of the group did not wish to provide any further information on the results posted in Romania. The company's turnover reached 608.9 million euros last year, up 39% against 2005. At the end of 2005, the company held 5 operational stores on the Romanian market. The retailer has also announced its plan to double the number of domestic stores by the end of next year using investments of over 180 million euros, in 8-9 new locations.
