Compaq fares well in Romania

10.08.2001, 00:00 10

Compaq Romania has consolidated its leading position on the Romanian market, according to a company release. IDC Europe's survey shows that Compaq ranked first on the server market in Romania in 2000, both in terms of number of units sold (20% market share) and of total value of units sold (32%).

The company in 2000 registered 16% in market share for the former and 25% for the latter, which placed it first (number of servers sold) and second (total value of servers sold) in Romania.

The IDC survey also estimates that although infrastructure projects are slow to proceed, the IT systems market (that is computers, servers and technical workstations) in Romania made a small progress in both value and volume in 2000 compared with 1999, which trend could be mainly explained by the demand for workstations.

The domestic market is still ruled by Intel servers, which account for 94% of the volume sold, and for 61% of the total value. Analysts also say that top-performance systems are still in extremely low demand, because major projects are yet to be carried out in Romania.

In spite of the unfriendly market conditions, Compaq in 2000 sold 743 units (servers and workstations), making $8.27 million, that is an increase of 39% and 26% respectively compared with last year. IDC estimates the annual average growth pace of the Romanian server market to reach 12% over the next five years, both in value and in volume, reaching $45.01 million and 6,557 units by 2005.
