EU accession requires energy privatisation

11.05.2004, 00:00 14

The year 2007 is a realistic EU accession target for Romania, given its upcoming structural economic reforms, with emphasis on the energy sector, said Jonathan Scheele, head of the European Commission Delegation for Romania. "If we see the privatisation of Petrom, together with the electrical power and natural gas companies that generate a large proportion of the economy's arrears, Romania doesn't have too much to worry about regarding accession in 2007," Scheele specified. He added that negotiations between the European Union and Romania would not be affected by the competition of Mircea Geoana (Foreign Minister) and Ioan Rus (Administration and Interior Minister) in the race for the respective mayoralties of Bucharest and Cluj. "The EU does not negotiate with Mircea Geoana or Ioan Rus. What really matters is Romania's position and not the contribution of one person or another. These political decisions will hardly affect the negotiation process," he explained. ZF
