Communications remain one of the most dynamic industries in Romania. At least this is what the many events organised in this sector point to. The latest such event, the 2003 Regional Communications Forum, began in Bucharest on Tuesday and brought most of the major operators on the market together. The event also comes with an exhibition where only a handful of players in this sector participate. A stand that quickly catches everybody's eye is that of CDMA mobile telephony operator Zapp, which displays the much-promised new clamshell phones, one of which has a black and white display and is already available on the market, while the other comes with a colour display and is slated for release in November. Zapp is also getting ready to announce the opening of the lab to develop applications for the phones running Brew (sort of an OS for CDMA terminals) next month. Another terminal Zapp is to release in Romania most likely next summer signals the introduction of a new kind of services in this operator's network. The terminal, which has a colour display and is GPS-enabled, will be possible to use as both a mobile phone and a walkie-talkie. The walkie-talkie feature of the phone can be enabled or disabled by the push of button, and the terminal could make a handy business tool. As for the top GSM operator on the market in terms of number of clients, Connex, the strategy it uses to win over as many business clients as possible is paying off. The company's marketing VP Michael Foley says Connex has already gained 75 clients for integrated communications services in the first six months from the introduction this strategy. Connex will provide these companies with fixed and mobile voice and data communications solutions for two to five years. ZF
