Iaki four-star hotel in Mamaia, owned by former football player Gheorghe Hagi, has budgeted an over 20% increase in revenues for this year, to 3.4 million euros.
The level of revenues places it among the top seaside hotels, mainly competing with Europa hotel in Eforie Nord, controlled by businessman George Copos, and the 5-star Rex hotel in Mamaia.
"The increase is due to the corporate contracts sealed, which contributed 60% to revenues, as well as to the multiple requests for organised events," said Claudia Oprea, marketing & sales assistant at Iaki hotel.
Considering the hotel is permanently open, its officials focus on organised events, with an investment plan that entails increasing the capacity with a 450-person event hall and more rooms.
"On the 4th floor, we plan to build 23 double rooms and 4 suites," said Claudia Oprea, who specified this year's investments would come to 2 million euros not including VAT and will be secured from the hotel's own financing sources.
Iaki hotel can currently accommodate 98 people and one of its major rivals in the resort is the 5-star Rex hotel controlled by Adamescu family.
Iaki hotel will derive the bulk of its revenues in July and August, with the two months to bring around 38% in overall turnover.
"Last year, July was the peak month, securing 21% of total 2007 turnover, while August had a 20% contribution to total revenues," specified Oprea. In 2007, Iaki registered turnover worth 2.7 million euros, amid an average occupancy rate of 50% per year. However, during summer months the occupancy rate almost doubles.
This year, rates will rise by 5% on average from last year. According to the information provided on the hotel's website, a double room will cost 215 euros per night during June 13-September 7 period, with the price to include breakfast, lunch, access to the pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and fitness rooms.
Iaki is the former Hotel Bucuresti, which was taken over by Hagi Sport SRL firm from Mamaia SA company. Hagi is not the only sportsman to invest in tourism. Besides him, footballers like Gheorghe Popescu, Adrian Ilie or Ioan Timofte have invested part of their earnings in hotels.
