Intel, the world's largest manufacturer of chips, at the beginning of next year will launch the new generation of server processors, Itanium, which will be the best product of this kind, aimed especially at companies with e-business activities.
The new processor is designed for managing client databases, performing online transactions, supporting the decision-making process, managing supplier chains, but it can also be used as an Internet server.
"You can provide for real-time feed-back, individualisation, availability and security for a large number of clients," Olivier Riviere, marketing manager for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) area for the new range of products, told an e-business forum organised by Intel.
"We have already delivered around 6,800 prototype systems geared with 32,000 Itanium processors, in order to be tested by system integrators and specialised institutes. We have already developed about 600 applications especially for Itanium," Olivier Riviere stated.
Built on Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) architecture, first developed on 64 bits, Itanium operates on frequencies of up to 800 MHz and is made up of more than 320 million transistors.
"Actually, at very short intervals, we manage to double the number of transistors that we can integrate in a processor. By downsizing the distances between transistors, we increase the speed of electrons, which we have not managed to influence yet," Rob Eckelmann, Intel vice-president for EMEA area, stated.
The launch of this processor is part of the new Intel strategy, oriented towards e-business. Itanium is aimed at high-power servers designed to support large volumes of electronic deals, to process huge databases in real time, to run high-security applications and perform complex analyses.
One of the strong points of the systems based on the new processor is their flexibility, which depends upon the number of processors, memory and operating system.
