The Peasants (PN?CD) and the Liberals (PNL) yesterday announced the dissolving of the alliance called CDR (Romanian Democratic Convention), after the last negotiations held on Monday evening by leaders of the two parties failed, both sides blaming each other for the melting of the alliance.
PN?CD National Leadership Bureau yesterday ratified the exclusion of PNL from the Convention, in line with the decision made by the team of negotiators, who reproached the Liberals with having breached the alliance's functioning protocol, Peasants' chairman, Ion Diaconescu, announced yesterday.
"The Liberals, through all the almost hostile manifestations against PN?CD and CDR have separated themselves almost definitely from the alliance," he stated. Diaconescu added that he had let the Liberals know that he no longer accepted repeated delays, especially as during Monday meeting PNL representatives were not mandated for negotiations, thus asking for the postponement of any decision until the congress to be held on August 18.
"An alliance cannot be constituted on strikes and hatred, but on good willing and harmony," the Peasants' leader considered, referring to "acid" statements issued by traditional partners and by PNL prime deputy chairman Valeriu Stoica.
Collaboration at the level of an alliance between the two parties would be possible, said PN?CD chairman, provided that PNL leaders publicly apologise for all the accusations and manifestations that offended CDR and Peasants' leaders.
PN?CD general secretary Remus Opris showed that it was for the third time when PNL "deserted the CDR spirit," giving as an example the situation of 1992 when the Liberals, led at that time by Radu Campeanu, made this decision, while this spring the "political successor of Campeanu, Valeriu Stoica, decided to run on separate lists."
PNL leadership also admitted yesterday the death of the Democratic Convention following the statement made by PN?CD chairman Ion Diaconescu. PNL's spokesperson, Crin Antonescu, said that his party cannot be held responsible for the split of CDR and announced that PNL would try to form a liberal-democratic alliance.
"CDR death was scheduled and ascertained by them. As PNL is the only party that stayed in the alliance and observed the protocol code, and it takes at least two parties for a alliance, then CDR is dead," he said. "PN?CD could not admit that CDR no longer was able to last under its hegemony," Antonescu stated. He added that PNL took part in CDR session on Monday with the purpose to tackle the possibility to run on joint lists and to appoint a sole candidate for presidency, but "PN?CD representatives refused to tackle something else than PNL's self-suspension."
According to Antonescu, the Liberals will no longer allow PN?CD to use CDR symbols. The Peasants decided to keep CDR name for the political alliance, and the extended alliance, that is to include the Civics as well, to be named either Conventia Dreptei Romanesti (Convention of Romanian Right Forces) or Grupul Dreptei Romanesti (Group of Romanian Right Forces), "to give satisfaction to our colleagues," Diaconescu said. He stated that he would ask Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu to officially announce his candidacy as soon as possible, so as signatures may be raised in due time. PNL vice-president Paul Pacuraru stated that "last evening's decision raised a new difficulty for Mugur Isarescu in case he decides to run for presidency, as he appealed to credible political forces that may provide a wide support and electoral basis." PNL leaders pointed out that PNL wanted to set up an alliance able to provide "wide support for a candidate to presidency." PNL wants Theodor Stolojan as candidate for the presidential seat. Paul Pacurariu said that local organisations received a material that includes seven potential choices, starting with the alternative to run on common lists in CDR and to support Mugur Isarescu for presidency, and also including the solution of an alliance PNL-ApR, PNL-CDR, PNL-ApR-CDR, etc.
