PC market doubles, foreign brands on top

22.11.2005, 20:25 9

The number of computers, (PCs, laptops and servers) sold in Romania doubled (an increase of 93.7%) in the third quarter this year from the same time last year, a survey by the US-based research company IDC shows. In terms of value, the sales volume jumped 77.7%.

Desktop computers continue to account for most of the market - 69.7% in terms of value, and 84.1% in terms of the number of units.

Although portable computers account for only 13%, sales went up by 111% compared with last year, in terms of number of units, and 65% in terms of value. This growth is in line with the world trend of shifting from fixed, desktop computers to mobile computers, as wireless Internet technologies gain widespread support.

The IDC survey reveals some changes in the ranking of the main manufacturers. Market sources say that, to a certain extent, they are the result of the introduction of the verification of statements made by manufacturers about their sales, verifications based on data supplied by software and hardware suppliers.

The top two positions on the Romanian market are held by foreign companies, namely HP and Lenovo (the Chinese group that bought IBM''s PC manufacturing business). Third in line came Flamingo. The fourth and fifth positions depend on whether one considers the number of units sold (K-Tech and Complet Electro Serv, a division of the Altex Group) or sales value (Fujitsu Siemens and K-Tech).

"The hierarchy of the main distributors was affected by the delivery of 24,000 computers to the Education Ministry during this period and by the vouchers system enabling young people to buy a computer. We are also noting the fast-paced growth of the Acer notebook brand, due to aggressive promotion, not only in Romania but also in Europe," Laurentiu Popescu, IDC Romania director told Ziarul Financiar.

Next year is expected to witness even more significant growth on the computer market, given that "there is one computer for every 20 people in Romania," Popescu said. victor@zf.ro
