PDSR and PSDR to become allies

21.08.2000, 00:00 10

PDSR (Party of Social Democracy) and PSDR (Romanian Social Democrat Party) might create a pre-electoral alliance, after the negotiations held between the specialists of the two parties had showed that their programmes were not divergent.

The negotiations ended on Friday and the leaders of the two parties are to meet at the end of this week in order to decide whether they validate the technical negotiations' report, PSDR chairman Alexandru Athanasiu said. He told Ziarul Financiar that, in case the report was approved, "political negotiations will start with a view to creating an alliance and establishing electoral lists' structure."

If the report receives a negative vote, PSDR will start negotiating with other social-democrat parties, the next one on the list being PD (Democrat Party), Athanasiu said.

Sources within PDSR say that the alliance with PSDR is more than likely. Prime deputy chairman Adrian Nastase will represent PDSR in the political negotiations with PSDR.

According to PSDR leader, the two parties have reached this decision as they have compatible programmes, in spite of certain differences of opinion.

"There aren't any major contradictions, only several differences of approach, such as privatisation modalities in some particular domains, the role of SOF and legal aspects related to the way of evaluating real estate restitution," Alexandru Athanasiu mainatins.

As far as privatisation is concerned, differences of opinion are related to the role of social protection and of profit improvement, obtained by selling the enterprises.
