Petre Roman, Foreign Affairs minister and Democrat Party (PD) chairman, was on Friday designated by the party's Extraordinary National Convention as a candidate for presidential elections from the part of this faction.
Before his designation, several representatives of delegates praised and recommended Roman as the most appropriate person for the position of president, an idea taken over by the PD leader who presented himself, in his turn, as "the most suitable" person to hold the Cotroceni head position.
While enumerating Roman's qualities, PD deputy chairman Traian Basescu criticised two of his political opponents without specifying their names, though comments were quite transparent.
About one of the rival candidates, Basescu stated that, during the miners' riot of 1991, when Premier Roman was ousted, the president of that time had the obligation to abide by the law, which he did not, causing the "most serious law infringement" in Romania's post-December history. ZF
