OMV Petrom Bucuresti (SNP), the biggest Romanian company,announced it would invest around 100m euros in a wind powergeneration project, after it acquired a wind farm in Dobrogea, thuscompeting with major European energy generators, such as CEZ orEnel, for a slice of the wind energy market. The firm acquired byPetrom, Wind Power Park, owns in Dobrogea plots of land andlicenses for the construction of a wind farm with a projectedcapacity of around 45 MW, which can be extended to 54 MW. Theseller is Monsson Alma company, controlled by Romanian-born Swedishbusinessman Emanuel Muntmark, one of the biggest developers of windfarms in Dobrogea. Petrom estimates the wind power station maystart production in mid-2011. This is Petrom's second investment onthe electricity segment, after Brazi power station, set to run onnatural gas, which will have a 860 MW installed capacity.Investments in this project are put at 500m euros. "Through thisproject, we want to make use of the flexibility of Brazi station.With a portfolio that includes both gas-based capacities andcapacities using alternative sources, we can benefit from theadvantages of both technologies," stated Mariana Gheorghe, CEO ofOMV Petrom.
