Romania has major difficulties in its fiscal policy, withevasion reaching the proportions of a problem of national security,with a political decision being needed in order to move to arigorous payment of taxes, believes Eugen Radulescu, manager of theaudit division of the NBR (National Bank of Romania). "The level ofevasion is endemic... It has reached the dimensions of a nationalsecurity problem. We will not be able to progress, to get out ofthe void without solving this problem. There are major weaknessesalong the entire collection chain. Major competition distortionsoccur. Some pay, others don't. Some are strong, and are nottargeted by inspections, only fools are checked," said Radulescu atthe conference "Topical coordinates of the Romanian economy'srestructuring," organised by Capital magazine. He says in order tosolve the tax evasion problem, a political decision is needed. "Thepolitical world should decide it is time to be good payers oftaxes."
