Takata-Petri hires 1,000 people for Sibiu plant

26.05.2006, 00:00 14

Takata-Petri, the Japanese car parts producer, will hire almost 1,000 people for the plant that manufactures airbag sacks in Sibiu by the middle of next year, with the number of employees of the plant to go to 1,200.

The hiring campaign comes amid an expansion of production capacity. The two plants that Takata-Petri owns are already operational in Arad, where approximately 3,000 people are employed. In 2002 the company relocated the operations of leather dressing of steering wheels for Mercedes Benz, from the Czech Republic to Arad.

Company officials estimate that the 25 million-euro investment in the plant in Sibiu will be finalised by mid-2007, with the production facility set to operate at full capacity. This means the plant will deliver about 8 million airbag sacks every year to the assembly facilities Takata owns in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. As a result of the expansion of production capacities, another 950 employees will be added.

"The construction of Sibiu plant started in 2004, and production was at first limited to operations related to the cutting and sewing of airbag sacks. At this moment, the production process is complete, also including weaving and lining operations. Thus, we are now only focusing on the expansion of production capacities," Jakob Lux, communication manager with Takata group, told Ziarul Financiar. The plant operates in Zona Industriala Vest (Western Industrial Area) in Sibiu, which, since it was inaugurated in May 2003, has attracted major investors of the car industry, such as Renault and Continental AG, which were among the first companies to be based there.

The Sibiu-based plant in March saw a capital injection worth 8.2m euros by its majority shareholder. Takata-Petri activities in Romania centre on the areas of Arad and Sibiu, with the company owning another two plants in Arad, which manufacturing car steering wheels and seat belts. Company representatives say Takata has so far invested about 50m euros in Romania.

"The main reason why Takata has decided to invest in the area is primarily related to the fact that Romania is going to join the European Union," Jakob Lux also stated.
