CDR (Romanian Democratic Convention) is on the verge of dissolution, after PN?CD (Peasants' Party) gave an ultimatum to PNL (Liberal Party) to return to the Convention by July 15. The Liberals are accusing the Peasants of having wasted the electoral capital of the alliance. The two factions are already seeking solutions to ensure their own success during autumn elections, launching some "duos" of candidates for the President-Premier positions and looking for new alliances.
PN?CD asked the Liberals to issue a clear decision on the reconstruction of CDR, by July 15, when the leadership forum convened by PNL to the end of establishing the party's electoral strategy is due to begin.
"If this decision is not made, PN?CD will run on separate lists for the parliamentary and presidential elections, with its own electoral logo," the party's prime deputy chairman, Ioan Muresan announced. In his opinion, PNL pledged to remain part of CDR when signing the protocol of April. The Peasants' leader thinks that, beside PN?CD, PNL, UFD (Union of Right-wing Forces), and the Civic Alliance will also have to answer in front of the electorate.
Instead, Liberals' prime-vice president Valeriu Stoica holds PN?CD as the main responsible for the waste of CDR's electoral capital and for the "serious" waste of recovery chances held by the Convention. Stoica also said that returning to the traditional alliance with CDR would be "too high a risk" and that the Convention could be revived only with the help of a Liberal leadership and Liberal programmes.
PN?CD general secretary Remus Opris said that the Democratic Convention did not need new rules. He added that CDR's good functioning did not involve suffocating any of the coalition partners or dividing the electorate of one of its members in favour of another.
Both Liberal and Peasants' Party members have already started to prepare for separate participation in autumn elections. PN?CD will support Emil Constantinescu (for Cotroceni Palace) - Mugur Isarescu (for Victoria Palace). "A pre-electoral alliance can be created around this couple in order to implement the European integration programme, as the current president contributed to Romania's beginning the European integration process, while Prime Minister Isarescu coordinated the EU joining programme," Muresan explained.
On the other hand, PNL (Liberal Party) prime vice president Valeriu Stoica said that entering the electoral competition on separate lists was conditioned on finding a good President - Prime-Minister couple. Stoica added that he would wait to see what political alliances are created, as well as the personalities these new alliances would decide to promote.
The Liberal leader believes that a great centre-right coalition is an "utopia," arguing that one of the parties that may enter such a coalition, namely PD, "seems to be in an euphoric mood." Stoica said that PNL would form no alliances, but only mergers with the parties that acquired less than 3% in the local elections. In exchange, the Peasants are opened to "any form of collaboration" with the democrat forces, in order to prevent PDSR from coming back to power, as the leaders of this party announced they would renegotiate the treaties concluded by Romania with the EU, the IMF and the World Bank, Ioan Muresan maintained. He added that PN?CD "does not cling to any formula" of pre-electoral alliance, even mentioning the possibility of non-aggression pacts, regional support or common support of a President-Prime Minister tandem.
