Former football player Ioan Timofte will build a three-star hotel in Timisoara in a 1.5-1.8 million-dollar investment. The works will be finalised by the end of the year.
Timofte's hotel will be named Boavista, after the Portuguese football team Boavista Porto, where Timofte played until last year.
The hotel will have 60 rooms, a basement, a ground floor and three stories, Radu Radoslav, head of the Urbanism Department within Timisoara City Hall, stated.
Ioan Timofte told Mediafax that opening a hotel was one of his old ideas, adding that the hotel to be built in Timisoara aims at all the people visiting the city and his football mates as well.
Timofte did not specify the amounts he would invest in this project, saying that the value "will depend on the finishing works" to complete the new accommodation site.
Timofte is not the only Romanian football player to have become involved in real estate business. The others are Adrian Ilie, Gheorghe Hagi and Gheorghe Popescu.
The hotel belonging to the former football player will face the competition coming from a high number of hotels having the same size and which are being built in Timisoara, for which ten urbanism certificates were released.
According to Radu Radoslau, Italian construction group Incontro is working on a hotel with 60 rooms and three floors, in which it will invest about 1.5 million dollars. Other 2-3 similar hotels will be built by Romanian tourism companies.
Moreover, there are also other plans to build hotels having a higher accommodation capacity, such as the intention expressed by Starwood Hotels&Resorts Inc, which requested a space downtown Timisoara in order to built a Sheraton hotel with 150 accommodation places, a conference hall with a capacity of 600 places and another 30 conference halls with 30-place capacity.
