In Romania, people talk very little about ecology and only under special circumstances, such as an ecological disaster or high-level reunion of the ministers in the Carpathian Mountains and Danube region.
As for the ordinary people, the destruction of the forests or of the ozone layer, does not cause them to lose much sleep over such matters.
Or, if we talked about something more concrete, that is ecological toilets, the Romanians either have never heard of such things or, and that is the best you will ever find, those having travelled abroad regard them as an indulgence of the people in Western countries.
It is also true that if we take some time to think about the havoc industrial pollution wreaks, assembling some ecological toilets somewhere may seem trivial.
Toi Toi & Dixi, branch of Germany-based ADCO International holding became operational in June 2000 and deals in renting and emptying mobile toilet cabins (that is ecological ones).
Peter Rothbart is a German citizen who lives in Frankfurt and manages this company based in Bucharest. It took him one year to convince his partners to enter the Romanian market and it has been a year now since he has been trying to persuade the local authorities to play an active part in promoting this kind of toilets.

The mobile toilets imported from Germany are made of hard plastic and can be assembled on special locations on construction yards, outdoor events, military drills, religious reunions, sports events, meetings, in markets, fairs or cemeteries.
The Romanians wanting to buy an ecological toilet for themselves have two types of toilets available on the market to choose from.
L&T Import-Export, representative of the Holland-based Thet Ford brings chemical toilets in our country, while LIV International distributes biological toilets, imported from Aquatron (Sweden) and Ekolet (Finland).
Irina Opris, L&T Import-Export representative, says that although her company has been in business ever since 1999, the Romanians still know very little about the possibility of replacing the "classical" toilets with the ecological ones.
A mobile toilet supplied by L&T costs between $100-$150, depending on the complexity of the model and on the waste tank capacity (10, 12 or 21 litres).
Liv International has been working with Aquatron (for import of fixed toilets) ever since March 2000 and with Ekolet (for import of mobile toilets) ever since March 2001.
Ciprian Radoi, the company representative, says that besides the possibility of recycling to reintroduce the waste into the natural environment, the economic advantage of the biological toilets is that they require no maintenance costs (do not use energy or catalysts), unlike the chemical ones (necessary chemicals-related costs).
