As of May, Bucharest traffic will be monitored by over 200 video cameras installed in 100 major intersections, according to the management project conducted by the Bucharest Town Hall (PMB) Real-time traffic monitoring will allow public transport to have priority and could lead to an increase in the number of drivers fined by the Traffic Police, but does not guarantee improved traffic conditions in Bucharest. "Currently, the town hall cannot solve the traffic problem. It simply cannot. I think it will be at least five years, perhaps more, until this problem can be fully solved," Gheorghe Udriste, director of the general infrastructure and public services department within PMB, told ZF. He explained he meant car parks, traffic monitoring, the full rehabilitation of the road infrastructure and public transport operators' vehicle fleets. The monitoring project, worth 20.9 million euros, which started last spring, entails the creation of a video monitoring system for the capital's traffic, real-time synchronisation of traffic lights and giving priority to public transport, as well as the delimitation of the first exclusive bus lanes. "Around 100 major intersections in Bucharest are planned for rehabilitation in May. This entails new traffic lights, traffic detection systems, as well as the necessary infrastructure," said Udriste.
