Romanians working abroad and the high appetite for travel have in recent years pushed for the emergence of the strongest destinations on the domestic air transport market: Spain and Italy. Of the 700 flights per week from Bucharest's Henri Coanda airport, around 12% are headed for Spain and Italy, while in the case of Baneasa airport, from where 15-160 weekly flights are operated, around 70% of planes fly to cities of the two Latin countries.
Thus, 200 planes depart from Bucharest heading for Spain and Italy per week. Flights to Spain and Italy contribute the most to the turnover generated by the biggest traditional carrier on the market, TAROM, but also boost the expansion of low-cost operators such as Blue Air, Wizz Air, MyAir and easyJet. Spain and Italy have thus become airlines' biggest stake, as only from flights from Bucharest to these destinations carriers get more than 100m euros, according to ZF estimates taking into account an average price of 100 euros for a single low-cost flight and a price of 150 euros for a traditional airline.
Bets on these two destinations will rise this year, too, as all airlines operating on the market plan to raise the number of frequencies on these destinations or introduce new routes.
