Two Greek companies from the dairy industry, Tyras and Olympos, will invest 30 million euros to build a dairy products plant near Brasov. The Greek shareholders have established a new company, Lactolymp, to handle the investment.
"We bought 15 hectares of land 10 kilometres away from Brasov, where we will build a plant with a 4.1ha surface area. In the first stage of the project, the investment will amount to 15 million euros, only to reach 30 million euros in three or four years," Agnantis Evangelos, a representative of Tyras in Romania, told ZF.
The Greek dairy producer Tyras is the sole owner of Tyrom, based in Baraolt, which produces fresh dairy and cheese products, predominantly for export. Last year, Tyrom posted turnover worth 11 million euros, a 25% increase against 2004, and profit of 200,000 euros, according to data published in the Official Gazette.
"The new plant will only target the domestic market, with the plant in Baraolt to carry on its export activity. Tyras specialises in sales on the hotel, restaurant and coffee shop segment, while Olympos is a well-known brand in Greece, ranking second on the fresh milk market. The two companies are owned by brothers Dimitris and Michalis Sarantis," Agnantis Evangelos added.
According to the Tyras representative, the company completed an investment worth 15 million euros to build a dairy products plant in Bulgaria.
"In Romania and Bulgaria, we opted for a greenfield investment, because it has been proven that it's no longer lucrative to buy an old plant," he said. The Greek shareholders reached this decision after investing a few million euros in the Baraolt-based plant.
In addition to the land bought in Brasov, Tyras also acquired 4 hectares of land in Bucharest, where it will start building a warehouse.
"We want to first build the warehouse in Bucharest to test the Romanian market, and then start building the plant. Our shareholders have not yet set a date to start the construction," said Agnantis Evangelos.
