Arctic eyes electronics and home appliance components

30.11.2004, 00:00 9

Following Dacia's lead, home appliances maker Arctic Gaesti is trying to develop parts production facilities in its industry.

"We have invested more than 1 million euros in the production of parts in Moreni (a town less than 40km away from Gaesti) in an industrial park in the free zone. We are trying to duplicate in Romania what is already happening in Turkey, which has become the leading producer of TV sets in the region due to strong development in the industry for production of components for the electronics and home appliances," says Oguzhan Ozturk, Arctic's general manager.

He says that if component production develops, other players on the electronics and home appliances market may begin manufacturing in Romania.

"It's all about the economies of scale home appliance manufacturers can achieve if component suppliers are already present on the Romanian market that have already worked for Arctic or any other producer in this industry and are used to the requirements of a home appliance producer," Ozturk explains.

This strategy has already been experimented with on other markets in the Central and Eastern European region, such as Hungary, Poland and Slovenia, where investment in components for the electronics and home appliances industry has attracted major names like Electrolux and Whirlpool, besides local producers like Polar and Gorenje.

At present, the only international companies with manufacturing operations in Romania are Swedish group Electrolux and Turkish group Arcelik. Electrolux bought cooker factory Samus based in Satu Mare in 1997 where it has invested 15 million euros to date, mainly in boosting production capacity, environmental protection and developing new products. Electrolux has relocated part of its cooker production from countries like Italy or Sweden to the facility in Satu Mare over the last few years, doubling the production capacity of the factory in the last three years to 700,000, most of which is exported.
