Baumit: 30 million euros for expansion

21.02.2005, 00:00 15

Construction materials manufacturer Baumit Romania, a branch of Austrian concern Wopfinger, has voiced plans to open three more production units in Bucharest, Banat and Moldova over the following four years.

The company already owns two production centres in Bucharest (one for dry mortars and the other for wet mortars), and is about to complete the construction of a dry mortars plant in Teius (Alba County), under a ten million-euro investment.

"In the next stage, we will build a dry mortars factory in Bucharest, most likely in 2006, to be followed by expansion in the Banat area, along the Timis and Arad counties, and then in Moldova, in the Bacau-Iasi region," Laurentiu Lupusor, general manager of Baumit Romania, told Ziarul Financiar. Lupusor added that investments in the new production units will match the amounts invested in Teius.

The plant in Alba County will start production in June, but, according to estimates by the general manager, the maximum production level (120,000 tonnes of dry mortars) will only be reached over the next five years.

"Realistically speaking, if we look at the forecasts for the constructions market, we will reach this capacity in five years' time, with the factory designed to secure the necessary amount of construction materials in Transilvania for the next 25 years," Lupusor stated.

The Baumit Romania official estimates that the Teius-based plant will create turnover worth three million euros this year. "If everything goes well on the market, there are strategies for the construction of similar production units in Teius, as the land owned by Baumit in the area allows it," the general manager said. He outlined that the factory has been designed to supply materials mainly on the domestic market.

"We are no longer thinking to export to Serbia, the Ukraine or Bulgaria. We are looking at the Romanian market, and especially the Transilvania area, which we can cover with construction materials tailored to the local necessities," Lupusor added. transilvania@zf.ro
