Bechtel to hire 400 people by September

23.08.2004, 00:00 6

US-based company Bechtel, which has started the recruitment process for the first segment of the Transilvania motorway, will hire 410 people in Romania by next month.

After having hired 123 Romanian nationals for the 2B section of the highway - Campia Turzii-Cluj (Gilau), Bechtel hired another 87 persons in August, with 198 new jobs to be created in September.

"We feel that the Transilvania motorway project is a Romanian project and we intend to hire as many Romanians as possible," Bogdan Sgarcitu, Bechtel Romania's communications manager told ZF Transilvania. In the past week, the job hunting websites, the Territorial Labour Offices and the local press have been inundated with job announcements from Bechtel.

Bechtel's personnel department is building a database including the available workforce and, even if some of the candidates don't make the cut, they still have a chance for the future recruitment campaigns.

The Bechtel project is also expected to have a significant impact upon the business environment in Cluj and the neighbouring areas.

For instance, officials of the Cluj-based design companies, feel that the Brasov-Brs motorway should be regarded in terms of global importance, although there will also be local influences in each of the areas transited by the European project. Serban Tiganas, partner at one of the Cluj-based design companies, feels that the access way to Cluj is very important, as it will channel interest to this Romanian city.

"The offers of services in Cluj will become affordable for a bigger number of people. Commercial and financial-banking packages will be more easily bought by people from the expanded Transilvania area, whereas the neighbouring counties will be able to buy products and services from Cluj," Serban Tiganas explains. However, the architect says that the price of land cannot be significantly influenced by the motorway's construction.

Other Cluj-based architects feel that the Cluj-Turda area is already beginning to attract numerous investors. "Logistics centres, a factory, projects for commercial complexes - these are already being talked about in Turda," says Claudiu Botea from Arhimar company.
