Electrica says state stands only to gain from energy exports

For over a month, big energy producers have been exporting alarge amount of electricity, 500 MW, i.e. nearly 9% of theelectricity consumed in Romania last year, to a little-knowncompany based in Serbia , Rudnap
Electrica, the state-held company specialising in energy supply anddistribution, which acted as a broker between the producers and theSerbs, say the deal, although concluded under what many term as"non-transparent" conditions, only has advantages. Market sourcessay, however, that the energy was sold cheaper than it could havebeen, had an auction been organised, with the difference being of 1million euros less per month for the Romanian state.
"The 500 MW export that Electrica carries out via two bilateral 300MW and 200 MW contracts brings a significant profit to producersRovinari and Turceni Energy Complexes, Hidroelectrica andNuclearelectrica, to Transelectrica, to Electrica as broker of theexport contracts and to SNLO, which has boosted production andavoided redundancies," says Ioan Folescu, general manager ofElectrica.
