President Traian Băsescu intends to give another chanceto the Financial Guard and to the National Customs Authority, whichhe is considering keeping as they are until December 31st in orderto test their ability to fight tax evasion.
"I would give another chance to these institutions until December31st so they can prove whether they can fight tax evasion or not. Idon't think that when an institution is going badly, you dissolveit. You have to make it work," said the head of state yesterdaywhen the Public Service Ministry presented its review.

According to a draft Government decision, the Government isplanning to reduce the number of positions in the Finance Ministryby nearly 5,200 and dissolve the Financial Guard and the CustomsAuthority, with their duties to be handed over to the NationalFiscal Administration Authority (ANAF).
The President said the reasons for his reservation when it comes toreorganising these institutions were that he could imagine theCustoms being stripped of its corporate powers and transferred intoanother institution, such as ANAF, that European partners do notknow very much about.
