The five biggest foreign forestowners have come to own over 80,000 hectares on the Romanianmarket, according to ZF calculations based on the data provided byZoltan Kosy, country manager with Tornator, one of the top fiveplayers.

Scolopax, Cascade Empire,Tornator, Silvirom Timber and Greengold are the foreign companythat own the largest forest areas in Romania; this is the firstsuch ranking made public so far.

Forest investments are consideredsafe particularly during crisis periods since there are fewerpremises for a price decline. Another reason behind the decision toinvest is that the properties can be sold after a while, duringwhich revenues can be derived from logging and selling wood.

The average price per hectare offorest revolves between EUR2,000 and 4,000, so that the over 80,000hectares of forests can be valued at over EUR240 million, accordingto ZF calculations.

"The data presented are estimates. The situation is changing almost weekly," said Zoltan Kosy, countrymanager of Tornator, a Finnish group that owns about 12,000hectares of forest. He provided the data at the end of April.
