The main problems preventing Germans from increasing their investments in Romania are the very poor conditions of infrastructure, the expensive land and the lack of skilled staff. This is what a seminar organised by ZIARUL FINANCIAR revealed. German companies, according to official statistics, rank fourth in terms of foreign direct investments in Romania, and second among commercial partners of Romanian companies. Despite obstacles pertaining to infrastructure, expensive land and poorly skilled staff, more and more German investors are getting ready to enter the domestic market. Who are they and what is so attractive to them in Romania? Besides the opportunities on the market, "the workforce is still cheaper in Romania," stated the German Ambassador in Bucharest, Roland Lohkamp (photo). He added that of late German investors had become interested in automotive components, constructions, textiles and retail. As far as the Romanian Agency for Foreign Investments (ARIS) is concerned, investment in Romania is already safer for German companies since Romania will soon become a EU member. "German companies contributed 20% to the foreign direct investment attracted by Romania in 2005, namely one billion euros," stated Luciana Marinescu, an ARIS official. She specified there were more than 13,650 German held companies operating in Romania at the moment, whose share capital totals almost 1.4 billion euros.
