The Pizza Hut and KFC restaurant chains estimate they will derive cumulated turnover worth 38 million euros this year.
"Pizza Hut derived turnover worth 7 million euros in 2006, 20% up compared with 2005, while KFC restaurants posted turnover amounting to 20 million euros, up by 60% year-on-year," said Mariana Dumitrescu, marketing assistant at Pizza Hut.
The two brands were brought to Romania through franchising by American Restaurant System and US Food Network, both of which are part of Altrom group, controlled by businessman Gabriel Popoviciu.
"These results were triggered by the surge in turnover derived by our restaurants, as well as by the contribution brought by the ten restaurants we opened last year," Dumitrescu also said.
The companies intend to boost turnover to 10 million euros for Pizza Hut and to 28 million euros for KFC this year.
The main clients of KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants are people with average and high income who eat out often.
There are currently eleven Pizza Hut restaurants, four of which are located in Bucharest, two in Constanta and one in Iasi, Bacau and Cluj each.
"The most popular Pizza Hut restaurants are those located in Calea Dorobantilor and Calea Victoriei," added Dumitrescu. The former accounted for 35% of the company's turnover, namely around 2.4 million euros, while the latter accounted for 25% of the total revenue derived last year, namely 1.7 million euros.
The KFC restaurants are opened in 18 locations, nine of which in Bucharest.
In mid last year the companies announced they would expand the chain by four more restaurants. The total investment in the new restaurants amounted to 1.2 million euros.
"We opened two KFC and two Pizza Hut restaurants in Constanta and Ramnicu-Valcea," Dumitrescu also said. Each of the two chains already operated a restaurant in Constanta. The decision to invest in Ramnicu-Valcea was triggered mainly by the size of the city. When deciding to open new restaurants, the companies take into account the size of the city, the number of inhabitants, the economic power of the region, as well as the region's significance as tourist area.
"The sales reported by these four restaurants in December topped 215,000 euros, accounting for more than 7% of the companies' sales in this month," said Dumitrescu.
