Liberals want MPs to choose president

19.07.2001, 00:00 11

The election of Romania's President by Parliament and the limitation of his role to a state symbol is one of the 41 proposals for Constitution amendment that the Liberal Party (PNL) will present as a reply to the Governing party's attempt to revise the fundamental Law.

The Liberals advocate the change of the current system of electing the President so that this position should not be filled according to the electorate's direct option, but based on MPs' votes.

The president of PNL National Board, Theodor Stolojan, who said that the current situation of the presidential institution should not be maintained, as we "are embarrassing ourselves," supported the Liberal proposal.

"We have one of the worst systems, as the President has both legislative and executive powers," he says.

The Liberal leader considers there are two solutions: in the first case, the President should also be the Chief of Executive, as it happens in the US. Under the second scenario, the Chief of State should only be a symbol, as it is the case in Great Britain.
