New Volvo truck sales reach 53m euros

08.11.2005, 20:07 12

Volvo Romania, the domestic branch of Volvo Truck Corporation, in the first nine months of this year delivered new trucks worth a total 52.7 million euros, a figure that is almost 20% higher than in the corresponding period of last year, amid a doubling of the sales of trucks destined for international transportation.

In the first three quarters, Volvo managed to sell 359 trucks from the FH range, up from the 173 units sold in the same period of 2004.

"The increased sales of trucks destined for international transportation were due to deliveries to an important customer," says Cedric Bouan, general manager with Volvo Romania.

Overall, in the first nine months the company delivered 570 new trucks, almost 100 units more than in the same period of 2004.

Volvo sells three types of trucks, classified depending upon the sector they are destined for: FL, destined for urban distribution and public utilities, FM, used in the constructions industry, and FH, including trucks for international freight transportation.

The number of trucks in the FM range sold during the period under analysis dropped by 32%, to 186 units, amid weaker demand from the constructions sector, according to the Volvo official.

Sales of FL trucks, for urban distribution, stood at 25 units, a level close to that logged during the first nine months of last year.

During the same period, the company also delivered 147 used trucks.

"At the end of this year, we believe we will improve on our initial projection of 650 new trucks and 200 used trucks," states Bouan. He says that this year could see an increase of between 5 and 7% with regard to the sale of trucks weighing more than 18 tonnes.

Moreover, for 2006, he anticipates that the Romanian market will grow at a similar pace, much below its potential, which the Volvo representative sees as being double its current figure, a result likely to be reached in the next five years.

According to Finance Ministry data, Volvo Romania last year logged turnover worth 56.7 million RON (14 million euros) and profit standing at 6.2 million RON (1.54 million euros). These figures only refer to the activity of the company''s service network. Next year, Volvo plans to invest in the development of post-sale activities, by boosting the number of licensed service units. A new Volvo service unit will be opened in Constanta in the first half of 2006, according to Volvo representatives.
