The Praktiker store network, the largest player in local DIY retail, posted sales worth 53.4 million euros in the first quarter of the year, up 21.5% against the same time last year, according to information published in the German group's financial report. Romania was one of the most dynamic markets for the company in terms of growth in the first three months of the year, alongside Bulgaria and Poland. On the local market, the network numbered 20 stores at the end of the first quarter, compared with 16 in the same period of last year. The retailer intends to reach 30 stores in Romania in the coming two years, with openings planned for 2008 including Deva, Iasi (a second store), Pitesti, Sibiu and Piatra-Neamt. The average investment in a store amounts to 8-10 million euros. The Praktiker group has put the Romanian market at the centre of its international expansion plans, with the group being present in 8 countries. The same development strategy, outside Germany, was adopted last year, as well, when Praktiker Romania increased its sales by around 63% against 2006, and reached 251.4 million euros.
