Roman can't run PD side by side with Basescu

Democrats are to elect their vice-presidents and party secretaries by mid June, a decision made by the current leadership on Monday night.

Petre Roman did not attend the meeting and, despite Basescu's request that he should remain leader of PD (Democrat Party) senators, on Tuesday he announced he would relinquish the position.

During its first session presided by Traian Basescu, the PD leadership decided to call a meeting of the party's National Co-ordination Council (NCC) for June 15, in order to elect the 12 vice-presidents and the 24 regional executive secretaries of the party.

Petre Roman and Simona Marinescu chose not to attend the meeting on Monday night, as the latter had an argument with the new party leader during the reunion of PD's parliamentary group. Unlike the current formula, the future leadership of the party will consist in twice more members.

Certain party "barons" have yet to make up their minds about running for a new term. It is about Alexandru Sassu and Radu Berceanu.
